See & Do

The Rideau Canal

The Rideau Canal Waterway (opens May long weekend), which links the lakes and rivers between Ottawa and Kingston, is the oldest continuously operated canal in North America. The locks are operated today much as they were when first opened in 1832. Each lock is unique and the lock staff is always ready to offer the tourist any assistance they can. Most locks provide washrooms, overnight mooring and picnic facilities, including tables, benches and barbecue grills.  There is also a local marina and boatyard that provides services to boaters.

The Merrickville Blockhouse, a National Historic Site of Canada, was built by Lt. Col. John By as part of a chain of four Blockhouses for the defense of the Rideau Canal. The building is directly adjacent to the Merrickville locks of the Rideau Canal, in what is today known as Blockhouse Park. At one time this area was the heart of the thriving commercial and industrial area of Merrickville. The Museum is built on a stone foundation and the basement and first floor are constructed of stone. The second floor and roof are constructed of wood using the post and beam method. The exterior roof is clad in a non-combustible tin material.
